Portuguese Castro Laboreiro Dog picture
This dog is probably one of the most ancient pure breed dogs in the Iberian Peninsula. He got his name and his origin from Portugal´s village Castro Laboreiro, which due to its isolated situation has preserved the purity of the breed.

The
Castro Laboreiro dogs accompanied their master herding in the mountains, but their job wasn’t to herd but to protect livestock from predators like wolf. However, they could also herd the cattle if necessary.

Some people believe that the Labrador Retriever dog emerged from crossbreeding with
Castro Laboreiro dogs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 1400s.

The
Castro Laboreiro dog is very lovable and obedient to his master and family, whom he shows great loyalty. His gait is cheerful though quiet and protective, mainly with children. These pure breed dogs are as well great guard dogs and they have lately been helping the Portuguese soldiers during certain missions.

The
Castro Laboreiro dog has a thick, smooth, weather resistant coat, rather rough to the touch, close, dense and slightly dull. His coat colours come in various shades, most often grey to black-grey, but wolf colours from very light to medium and dark shades are also shown. He does not require special coat care, a weekly brushing is enough, and unless he is once very dirty, please do not bathe him!

The
Castro Laboreiro is a strong and healthy dog who lives in average 12 years. The number of puppies per litter is usually six.
